Under Construction

As with most projects, it started out innocently enough. I thought “hmm I’m bored with my homepage” and decided it was time to switch some things up. Then it spiraled. Not necessarily out of control, but into a much larger undertaking than I planned. Funny how that seems to happen every time I get in the mood to freshen things up, huh?

It’s absolutely no secret I’ve not been prioritizing the blog over the last few, well, years if I’m being honest. I’ve tried several things to try to help motivate me into posting more often and, while they’ve worked fine in the short term they just never stuck for long. I can’t really pinpoint why. I’ve even thought about giving up the blog entirely, but I just can’t talk myself into doing that. So what’s left? Well, I need to find my blogging groove again. I need to be excited about creating content again. When I was noodling over ways to light that spark again, naturally the first idea that came to mind was site refresh! (I think we can probably blame my day job for this since I’m leading my organization through a refresh of our website right now. Apparently one wasn’t enough.) Will this help me be more excited about blogging again? I’m not sure. But, I do know this much — it can’t hurt.

The two main changes to my site are a new homepage and the reintroduction of my release calendar. I’m very excited about both of them. I’ve wanted an alternative to the traditional WordPress “here are all the latest posts” front page, but it took me some time to decide exactly what I wanted to do. I’m really happy with how the new page and the necessary menus came together. I’m over the moon to reintroduce my release calendar. It’s a lot of work, but I certainly felt much more “in the know” about upcoming releases when I was managing it before. Be warned, it’s pretty sparse for now but it’ll be filling out in no time.

Since I’m doing this refresh in my downtime from work and other hobbies and responsibilities, it’s going to take me a little bit of time to get it fully where I want it. You might notice some weird things in the meantime. If you do, rest assured they are probably on a to-do list somewhere. 😉 I also went through and unpublished a lot of older content while I decide how much of it I plan to keep around. Is there any reason to keep 9 years of book reviews and several years’ worth of monthly wrap-ups and other miscellaneous posts? Probably not. I just have to decide how much of it I want to keep and how I want to restructure things.

I hope you’ll enjoy the new look — and, with any luck, more consistent content!
