Remember when I shared my September favorites and said some months it’s harder than others to pick favorites? October was that month. Of the 14 books I read, I gave 8 of them 5 stars. It was a pretty great reading month all in all. Even with 8 books with 5-star ratings, there were still a few that stood out from the pack. Let’s talk about them.
Down Too Deep wasn’t my first J. Daniels’ book, but it was the first I finished from this series. I wasn’t expecting to fall so freaking hard for Nathan (or Jenna, for that matter) so early on in the books, but I did. This single parent, friends-first romance made my heart so full. It wasn’t without a little drama and angst, but the conflict felt honest and real. Down Too Deep was, at times, an emotional read, but it wasn’t too heavy. After falling so hard for Nathan and Jenna, I’m inspired to go back and give the other books in the series another shot.
Baking Me Crazy is one of my favorite books of the year so far. Levi and Joss straight up stole my heart and I never want it back. Joss was amazing. I want to be best friends with her. Levi is one of the swooniest book boys I’ve met in a long time. If best friends to lovers (with a bit of a “curse” twist) is your thing, you have to read this book.
Let’s be honest, Elle Kennedy could publish her grocery list and I’d be waiting with grabby hands. And I’d probably give it five stars. I love her books. She’s one of my go-to authors. This is another friends-to-lovers romance, but this time between a celibate hero and a super spunky heroine who’s just out of a crap relationship. (Ok, technically she’s still in the relationship for a portion The Play, but the dude is a jackass.) The chemistry and banter between Hunter and Demi was *kisses fingers* perfection! This book is low angst, low drama and fairly steamy after the slow burn.
Every time I read a new Kennedy Ryan, I’m struck by just how gorgeous her words are. I end up highlighting roughly half of the book each time, too. There’s just so much beauty in them. I straight up didn’t even read the blurb for The Kingmaker before I requested an ARC. I knew it was a duet, and while that did give me a moment’s pause, I decided to jump right in. The wait for part two isn’t that long. It’s going to be brutal, but I’ll deal.
Lennix and Maxim were everything. Their pairing was unconventional, their chemistry intense, and their passion incredible. I was hooked from the prologue and more or less devoured the book. Is it time for part two yet? Please?
I’ve been in love with the Winstons since I met Ashley in Beauty and the Mustache. I had a rough time with the last release and I actually chose to DNF it. Major sadness. Even still, I couldn’t get my grabby little hands on Beard Necessities soon enough. I needed Billy & Scarlet’s HEA. Goodness knows they had earned it. It was a long time coming, but it was absolute perfection. I won’t say anything to spoil it for you, but let me just say the Winstons (all of them) are in rare form and interfere in the best possible ways. Plus, Cletus is a national treasure.
Just thinking about this one gets me a little teary-eyed. I’m gonna miss the Winstons! But hopefully, they’ll continue to have cameos in the Smartypants Romance books.
