I Am am Unapologetic Romance Reader

Is it cheating to unearth a bookstagram post from a few months ago and repost it over on the blog (with a few edits)? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Either way, that’s what’s happening today. 😉

Say it with me: there is no reason to be ashamed of reading romance. I am a loud and proud Unapologetic Romance Reader. I’m so tired of women (and some men, I’d imagine) feeling like they have to hide what they prefer to read because of some perceived stigma. Judgmental people are going to judge. It’s in their nature. Who cares? Let them. Quite frankly, if someone has an issue with my reading preferences, I don’t really need them in my life. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They don’t need to like it or agree with it, but I won’t let them make me feel like less because it’s what I enjoy.

I understand romance might not be everyone’s preference. That’s fine. Do I think they’re missing out on some great books? Sure. But, I won’t shame them for it. I believe there’s something for everyone in the romance genre. (I’m always happy to try to help a non-romance reader find the book for them, too.) Romance has so much to offer. Some of it is my thing, others not so much. But at the end of the day? It doesn’t matter. I’m definitely not going to judge someone for what THEY love. I read what I love. I talk about what I love, both in real life and online. But, I wish more readers felt confident doing the same. Don’t ever let someone feel bad for something you enjoy.

I don’t believe in calling books, movies or anything else I enjoy a “guilty pleasure”. Why should I feel guilty about something that makes me happy? Romance makes me happy. There’s a lot of really messed up shit in this world and if I want to escape into a good book, why shouldn’t I? I love the characters, tropes, realistic (and even unrealistic) situations and yes *gasp* even the sexy parts. (I really love the sexy parts, y’all. The hotter the better, in fact.) I love books when they have a delicious slow burn, when friends fall in love, when enemies fall in love and when two people get a second chance at love. (Just not all in the same book, please and thank you. 😂) Basically I love it all… and I’m not sorry for it. I certainly won’t hide it. 💕
