As the end of 2018 approaches (rather rapidly, in fact) I’ll be spending the rest of it talking about my “bookish bests” during the Top 10 of 2018 event I’m hosting. Are you interested in joining? Check out the sign-up post for details.
Amidst all the various reading goals I set for myself each year, reading new and new-to-me authors is always in the back of my mind. I don’t participate in any new author challenges and I don’t set a numeric goal, but it’s something I try to do each year. So far this year I’ve read 48 debut or new-to-me authors. As you might imagine, they’re not all hits, but most of them were. It was tough to narrow the list down to just 10, but I managed. ?
Helen Hoang’s debut, The Kiss Quotient, was nothing short of absolutely magical. Stella and Michael were amazing. I loved the “own voices” nature of Stella and her Autism. Books like this are so important. I can’t wait to see what Helen gives us in 2019.
Y’all, if you’ve not yet discovered the amazingness that is Kennedy Ryan’s writing, what even are you doing with your life? Long Shot was my first of her books and OH EM GEE. It wrecked me in ALL THE WAYS. Not long after finishing it, I binged Flow, Grip and Still. It’s been months since I finished it and I still think about that series today. Gripstol forever.
We can definitely file Alyssa under “authors I should’ve read long before now”. I am 1000% in love with her Reluctant Royals series. I love the diversity of her characters and how real they all are. Both A Princess in Theory and A Duke by Default have been total hits for me this year. I can’t wait for more from her in the new year. Plus, I still need to go back and binge her backlist sometime…
Corinne Michaels’ books own my heart. One Last Time was my first and I loved it so, so much. Hold You Close was also excellent. I can’t wait to read some of her newer releases and, naturally, tackle her backlist.
Y’all know how much I love my sports romance, right? I think I was half in love with Intercepted before I even read it. It totally exceeded my expectations and made Alexa Martin one of my favorite debut authors of 2018. I can’t wait for more from her in 2018.
Just go ahead and give me all the smart, if awkward, heroines… okay? Susannah Nix’s books are absolutely delightful. I’ve only found time to read the first two in her Chemistry Lessons series — Remedial Rocket Science and Intermediate Thermodynamics — but I need to read the third soon. Major love for both of them. Rising Star was totally different, but also wonderful.
Can I tell you I’m basically head over heels for Jenny Holiday’s Bridesmaids Behaving Badly series? I adored One and Only. It Takes Two was a fantastic follow-up. Merrily Ever After gave me all the feels. I love this group of friends and their guys. There’s so much good here!
Yes, I did just finally pick up a Tara Sivec book for the first time this year. I know, I know. Someone should probably take my romance blogger card away from me. I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. Her Naughty Princess Club series is nothing short of amazeballs. I love a good, unique retelling and this one definitely fits the bill. Cindy, Isabelle and Ariel are collectively three of my favorite characters of the year. I absolutely adored them and this series, which made me literally laugh until I cried. (And it even gave me some feels along the way.)
Y’all know I love my slow burn romance — Mariana Zapata, anyone? I was delighted to discover another author with slow burns to rival hers this year. J.T. Geissinger’s Slow Burn series is so, so good. I mean, I’ve only read the first two books — Burn for You and Melt for You — so far, but the third one is coming very soon. It’s waiting for me on my Kindle.
I first discovered Teagan Hunter in Let’s Get Textual and I fell in love. Boy, talk about a book that totally charmed me and made me literally laugh out loud. I Wanna Text You Up did the same. I can’t wait to read the third! The Here’s To series gave off a different vibe, but each book was a quick and enjoyable read.
