Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
I decided this weekend I’d been putting off reading The Hate U Give long enough. It was time to jump in. And I did. With both feet. I read it in a few hours time, unable to stop turning pages as I was totally consumed by the story. I’m not sure I’ll ever find the words to explain how much I loved this book or how important it is. Breathtaking. Heartbreaking. Utterly amazing.
This song. I love it so much.
I’m sorry, but I’m just a girl
Not usually the kind to show my heart to the world
I’m pretty good at keeping it togetherI hold my composure, for worse or for better
So I apologize if you don’t like what you see
But sometimes my emotions get the best of me
And falling apart is as human as it gets
You can’t hide it, you can’t fight what the truth is
You can pretty lie and say it’s okay
You can pretty smile and just walk away
Pretty much fake your way through anything
But you can’t cry pretty
I’ve found my dream job. It only took me to thirty *mumbles* years old to do it, too.
