Forget playing it safe.
John “Maverick” Nelson likes to live his life on the edge – literally. A crucial member of the search and rescue team in the mountainous British Columbian town of North Ridge, Maverick’s brash and bold attitude means he’s the first one to ascend into danger, no matter the risk.
When it comes to women, though, Maverick errs on the side of caution. For all his cocky charm, rugged good looks and sexual swagger, he remains as unreachable as the surrounding peaks. Hot, wild sex? He’ll tell you there’s no better way to spend a cold, wintry night. Relationships? He’d rather freeze.
That is until he lays his eyes on American Riley Clarke. Trading in the crippling expenses of Aspen for BC, Riley is North Ridge’s newest member of their search and rescue team and the only woman on the job, which means spending a lot of time with Mav in adrenaline-pumping situations.
With the chemistry between them hot enough to melt snow, keeping their hands off each other is detriment to the success of their team. Besides, Maverick’s her boss and she didn’t work her ass off in Colorado just to throw it all away for some mind-blowing sex.
But when the worst winter in years sweeps in, Riley and Maverick will have to battle the elements along with their attraction for each other. And if either of them slip up, both of them will be in for a deep freeze.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration.
This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I’d been looking forward to getting John’s (aka Maverick’s) story since finishing Wild Card. And let me just tell you one thing — Maverick started off with MAJOR feels. I’m not sure the last time I was left basically sobbing during the prologue of a book, but that’s exactly what happened here. Karina didn’t waste any time getting into the story, with a heartbreaking look at Riley’s past. It was pretty heavy, but most of the rest of the book wasn’t quite this intense. Don’t get me wrong, there were some pretty angsty moments and I definitely shed a few tears, but it was nothing like what I was gearing myself up for as a result of the prologue. But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
I really enjoyed the pairing of Riley and Maverick. They understood each other in a way no one else ever would because of their shared profession. I can also understand why a relationship between them should be off the table because of the stress of search and rescue. But, forbidden or not, I was all in for them because I loved the two of them together. They were both wonderful, complex characters. I shouldn’t pick favorites, but I especially loved Riley because she’s a strong woman doing a job where you don’t usually find women. We all face our challenges in the workplace, but I can’t imagine what hers must have been like. I was expecting Maverick to be more closed off, so I was surprised to find out he really wasn’t… at least when it came to Riley. I wouldn’t say he wore his heart on his sleeve, exactly, but he was a lot more forthcoming with his feelings than I expected him to be.
I just flat-out loved this story. As I said, it was a little bit lighter than I expect from Karina, the Queen of Complicated and Angsty Romance, but it still had moments that punched me in the feels. Just to be clear, this isn’t a light and fluffy romance. It’s complicated, sexy and has plenty of feels. It just wasn’t quite as intense as I was expecting from the prologue that knocked me on my ass. All that said, Maverick was a gorgeous book and love story between two characters I fell for… hard. I loved reading along as Riley and Maverick discovered each other, finally gave into their feelings and learned more about themselves along the way. I can’t wait for more from the North Ridge series.
“I just know… the moment I touch you, that’s all I’ll ever want.”
“I want to see all parts of you Riley, not just the ones you choose to show me. I want to see the real you, the one you hide away.”
“Love is chaos.”
There’s closure in all of this. But closure doesn’t mean a door closing on pain. You can have peace and pain at once. The heart can weather any storm.
Will you be reading Maverick?
Have you read Wild Card, the first book in the series?
