For the last few years, I’ve been doing one of these “best of” the year series of posts as a way to tip my hat to the best of the best of the past year … and begin looking forward to the new year, as well. I love looking back and picking out my favorites and thought it would be fun to open it up for others to join. So … I’ll be doing that from now until the end of December. Interested in joining? Check out the sign-up post.
I’m one of those people who highlight liberally when they read an ebook. (And I use a fair amount of page flags when I read a print one, too.) You might notice I also often use quotes in my reviews. I love words. It doesn’t matter if the words make me laugh or cry — or swoon or fan myself, for that matter — I just love them. It was tough to pick my favorites of 2016 — and some of them might not make a whole lot of sense without the context of the book, but I’m ok with that.
Boy, these prompts just keep getting harder and harder…. and I have no one to blame but myself!
I’m happiest with my feet planted firmly on the ground. But my heart — it flies.
Football was something everyone had in common—like a mutual religion. We all believed in touchdowns and field goals. We were all baptized in the floodlights.
“So we’re a fucked-up guy and a disaster-magnet girl ready to take on a country with more sheep than people.”
“Yeah, we got this.”
“I’m broken. I’m literally broken.”
“Yeah, but broken isn’t the same as unfixable.”
I was a little torn, frayed around the edges, and it was going to be a long, bumpy road to being a hundred percent okay. And nothing was going to stop and wait for me to get there.
“If you want a stats question answered, go to the math geeks. If you want a physical need met, go to an athlete. Bodies are the tools of an elite athlete. They take care of it, know how to push its limits, yada yada.”
“I want a lot more of these nights with you, Isla. I want all of my nights with you.”
Life is a funny thing. We only get so many years to live it, so we have to do everything we can to make sure those years are as full as they can be. We shouldn’t waste time on things that might happen someday, or maybe even never.
There are moments in your life, people in your life, that when they cross your path and meet your eye, you know. Maybe it’s all in the chemistry, certain pheromones that react when they mix together, maybe it’s a smell that triggers a memory, maybe it’s a glimpse at a future you don’t recognize or a hint at the past, a life you’ve lived and forgotten. Whatever it is, you know that moment, that person, is going to shape you for the rest of your life.
I’ve realized that the Beatles got it wrong. Love isn’t all we need–love is all there is.
“That’s right. You seize that woman, Cletus. You make her yours. And then after, you give that woman your sausage.”
“Some of the most beautiful and poignant words I’ve ever read have been in romance novels.”
There comes a time in a girl’s life when she has to reach deep down into her soul, clear the pathways of her inner goddess and let out her nuclear Satan. You know what I’m talking about.
Kisses were magic, everyone knew this. They turned frogs into princes, they woke princesses from deadly sleep, and they decided the fates of kingdoms and empires.
“You are my dream now, December Howard. You are everything to me. My heart beats for you, my soul is only whole when you’re near. You’re my home, my shelter, my wildest fantasy, and I cannot imagine a future where you’re not mine, because I’m yours in every sense of the word.”
“I love every broken part of you and how well it fits with every broken part of me.”
