Random Acts of Kindness

This is a different type of post for me, but it’s one that I just had to write. I think we can all agree 2016 has been a rough year. Thankfully not for me personally, but just in general. From the personal struggles of family and friends, to deaths of loved and respected artists, to the increase in violence and hate after a divisive election, it’s been tough. After reading a post shared on Facebook by a friend about a Kindness Advent Calendar, I fell in love with the idea. (I also fell into a Google search hole as I tried to create a great list of random acts of kindness to complete myself this month.) There are just so many great ideas out there! I thought I’d write a post and share some of my favorites — as well as some of my own bookish suggestions — with you today. (I tried to keep most of them of the low cost/no cost variety because I know money can be tight this time of year.)

I did think about creating my own calendar, but in all honesty, I was too lazy. A list is just as good, right? 🙂

TOTALLY FREE

  • Smile at everyone you see (yes, even strangers!)
  • Write a positive note on a Post-It and leave it for someone to discover
  • Text, tweet or email a compliment to three people
  • Share a positive post on social media
  • Let someone go in front of you in traffic (and do it with a smile)
  • Appreciate good service by smiling and thanking anyone who helps you
  • Be positive all day long, say only nice things to yourself and to others
  • Take time to appreciate someone who does something you take for granted
  • Open the door for someone
  • Offer to take a picture for tourists
  • Be the one to shift a negative conversation or gossip into something positive
  • Reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while
  • Compliment a stranger
  • Be kind to someone you dislike
  • Praise the work of others

LOW COST

  • Candy cane bomb a parking lot
  • Make a card for a soldier
  • Buy a friend a cup of coffee
  • Do a secret act of kindness for someone
  • Put your loose change in a charity box
  • Give a gift to a friend
  • Bring a sweet treat to the office to share
  • Pay the toll for the person behind you
  • Add time to someone’s parking meter or leave extra time on yours when you leave
  • Buy an extra sandwich and give it to a homeless person

DONATIONS

  • Donate books to a school or charity
  • Donate a wreath to Wreaths Across America (or volunteer if you’re in the DC area!)
  • Donate clothes to Dress for Success or another charity
  • Donate money to your favorite cause/foundation
  • Donate toys via Toys for Tots or other programs
  • Donate canned food or supplies to a local food pantry

BOOKISH/BLOG WORLD

  • Write a book review for a book you loved
  • Visit five blogs and comment on a post (or two)
  • Gift an eBook you loved to a friend
  • Share another blogger’s post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest

AND DON’T FORGET YOURSELF

  • Do something that makes you laugh out loud
  • Get outside for a soul soothing stroll in nature
  • Dance around the house to your favorite happy music
  • Forgive yourself for any mistakes you’ve made.

This world can definitely use more kindness, right? I think doing something nice for someone else, with no expectations in return, makes you feel as good as the recipient. 🙂
