On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

In Review My Thoughts

Aside from my teen years, when I devoured any and all R.L. Stine/Christopher Pike/etc. type mystery/thriller/suspense books, I’ve never really been a fan of the genre. I don’t love being scared. Ok, that’s a lie. I do in the moment. It’s afterwards, when I’m lying down to sleep and I’m at the mercy of my overactive imagination that I regret watching or reading something scary. But, I’m a big fan of K.A. Tucker and I’ve enjoyed everything she’s written so far. I was willing to give this one a shot, even though it didn’t appear to be romance-driven. I was curious to see how she would tackle a different genre. I was willing to risk the nightmares or freak out moments (and I had both) and I regret nothing. This was a fantastic read!

I went into He Will Be My Ruin nearly entirely blind. Sure, I read the synopsis – ages before I actually read the book. I hadn’t looked at any reviews or ratings from other bloggers. I didn’t want anything to ruin the book and I’m glad that’s how I chose to do it. As soon as I picked it up, I knew it was going to be one of those books I finished in a day. I would’ve read it in one sitting if I’d been at home alone, but I was away for the holidays, so I had to be somewhat social. I still basically growled any time I had to sit it down. My mind worked overtime as I tried to figure out what happened to Celine. I was on the edge of my seat as I worried if Maggie would meet the same fate. Just when I thought I had everything worked out, a new twist occurred and I had to start all over again. I forgot just how much I loved trying to solve a mystery before the big reveal.

I’m probably not going to run right out and start buying all kinds of mystery/thriller books, but I enjoyed a little break from the romance I usually read. If K.A. writes a book like this again in the future, I’ll definitely read it. He Will Be My Ruin had a little bit of everything – secrets, lies, suspense, action and mystery. There was even a bit of kissing (and more) thrown in there, and while it was central to the plot, it certainly wasn’t the main focus. I was surprisingly ok with that. (You now how much I love my kissing books.) This one was something totally different than what I typically read and I really enjoyed it.

If you enjoy mystery/thrillers, you should give this one a shot. If you’ve enjoyed K.A.’s other books, you should try this one. Expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride. It’ll take you places you never would’ve guessed.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

About K.A. Tucker

Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons.

She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit.

Kathleen currently resides in a quaint small town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.

It was sooooo good! Such a different side of KA. I mean, so many of her books have *some* amount of suspense in them, but nothing like this! I enjoyed her Burying Water series, but it was Ten Tiny Breaths that I loved the most.
