My rating:

There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place.

As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O’Neil's bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not...

She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

in review my thoughts

Upon reading the blurb for this book at the end of Perfection, I promptly went to Amazon, bought a copy and jumped right in. I’m a total sucker for romances between two enemies. Rory and Connor had a heck of a history – and the whole town knew it. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen when those competitive, angry feelings turned into something else. Throw in a fake relationship and some very real chemistry, and I was totally hooked.

I really liked both Rory and Connor. Their backstory made me shake my head and laugh. It was over-the-top… in the best way possible. When they are both picked to work on the same construction project, sparks fly and things just get more interesting. I loved their banter and their chemistry. They might’ve been rivals who hated each other in theory, but there was so much more there than that. The plot was a little spastic at times, but I didn’t care one single bit. I enjoyed reading about these two characters so much, the oddities barely registered. I knew once the fake relationship agreement was thrown in, things would get interesting quickly and I was right. I had a big ol’ goofy grin on my face during the biggest part of this book.

Checkmate was fun. I liked that characters from the first two books made an appearance and reading this book strengthened my resolve to both go back and read the first book and continue reading this series. Not only was it laugh out loud funny, it was also charming, sexy and romantic. I’m definitely a fan of this author and series.

About R.L. Mathewson

R.L. Mathewson (1979-Present) was born and raised in Massachusetts. She is known for her humor, quick wit and ability to write realistic characters that readers can easily relate to. She currently has several paranormal and contemporary romance series published including A Neighbor From Hell series.

Growing up, R.L. Mathewson was painfully shy and was known to hide behind a book or two. After high school she attended college, worked as a bellhop, fast food cook, and a museum worker until she decided to take an EMT course. Working as an EMT helped her get over her shyness as well as left her with some fond memories and some rather disturbing ones that from time to time show up in one of her books. When a back injury left her unable to work as an EMT any longer she began working in Residential homes only to discover that she just didn't have the stomach for the job.

Today, R.L. Mathewson is the single mother of two young children that keep her on her toes and enjoy scaring the heck out of her with their antics. She has a bit of a romance novel addiction as well as a major hot chocolate addiction and on a perfect day she combines the two. When she's not writing she's playing online Scrabble, coloring with her kids, or trying to figure out how one of her kids managed to get a chocolate pudding footprint on the ceiling.
