Some loves will last 'til your dying breath
Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.
Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.
Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…
In order to keep this review spoiler free, it’s gonna be a short one. I’ve struggled with the thought of how to write it and not give anything of substance away – and even briefly considered NOT writing a review, but that’s against my nature. So, here we go…
Layla, Roth, Zayne and the rest of the Dark Elements crew are back with the third and final book in the series and there’s a lot more at stake besides who Layla will end up with. The Lilin is on the loose. Layla is changing. Bad things are happening across the city. While I won’t say the action is non-stop, I will say there’s A LOT of it in this book. When it’s time for you to read this one, make sure you set aside a few hours. You won’t want to put it down. I didn’t. I actually refused to even cook dinner. Pizza delivery FTW! But I digress.
I absolutely loved the world Jen built in this series and how she really showcased it during this book. Some of the unknowns were wrapped up in surprising ways. We get to see a whole new side to the familiars. The romance was fantastic. And above all, the character growth was incredible. Each of the characters has really come into their own since the beginning of this series, but no one perhaps more than Layla. She’s a strong, kickass chick and that’s one of my favorite things in books.
I can’t say enough how much I loved this series and appreciated this ending. Not only was I pleased with how the love triangle wrapped up, I was completely engrossed in the non-romance storyline. I laughed and cried, because Jen has this way of giving you the feels but off setting it a bit with humor. And trust me, this book had plenty of her trademark humor. It also had some pretty emotional moments that left me reading for tissues… and wine. I truly do hate giving up these characters and this world – which is a lot more interesting than the real DC – but I’m happy knowing they’re all in good hands now. I loved Jen’s words on Facebook after the release of this book and can’t think of a more perfect way to close out this review…
I think it’s a good time to remind you that stories never truly end. Even when you get to the last book in a series and come to the very last page, and have experienced all the ups and downs, the characters and everything you felt while following them on their journey, live on. They never go away, and when you’re ready, they’ll always be waiting for you to come back to them.
