Dr. Phoenix Reid isn't who she seems...
Everyone knows a phoenix rises from the ashes. What they don't talk about are the people she drags with her into the fire.
I thought one hot night with Max Hallowell was harmless. I never expected it would force me to face my past or bring back the man who swore he'd never let me go. Now Max wants to help me. Wants to save me. But if I let him, he'll be destroyed. I can already smell the flames.
A woman with a secret past. A man determined to protect her. A dangerous passion that could cost them both everything.
I can never tell exactly what I’ll get with one of Lexi’s books –and I wasn’t expecting Nix’s backstory to be as complicated as it was. But, holy crap. What a fantastic read. I couldn’t get enough of this book.
There was a time in the New Hope world where I wasn’t all that warm to Max. I was suspicious of him and, more than anything, I didn’t want him with Hanna. It turns out he’s a really great man and I was thrilled that he got his chance at a real happily ever after in this book. But, it wasn’t going to be easy…
So, yeah, I fell for Max hard during this book. He’s a great man, a wonderful father, a fantastic friend. He’s sizzling hot and protective and he can rescue me on a stallion any day of the week. *swoons* It was impossible NOT to love him in this book. Nix, too, was a great character. It was a little tougher to get a read on her because she was keeping so many things secret, but I still liked her. She was a tough cookie and, after learning more of the things she dealt with when she was younger, I see why she had to be. No way she could’ve survived otherwise.
Max and Nix had tons of chemistry and the sexual tension between them sizzled. Her walls were up tight, but if anyone was going to be able to get through them, it was Max. I mean, how can you resist the sexy single father with an amazing heart? I don’t know how she fought her feelings for as long as she did, to be honest. There was definitely a good bit of back and forth in this book and it bordered on frustrating at times, but the more I found out about Nix’s background, the more I understood. I just wanted them to both be happy… you know, together. That’s not asking too much, is it? 🙂
There were definitely some unexpected twists and turns in this book. The blurb is pretty vague, so I will be too, but expect the unexpected from Playing with Fire. More than once I was left wondering if something was real and what could possibly happen next. When you take the suspense and mystery and mix it together with the passion these characters share, you get something special. Set it in the New Hope world, with its characters I love, couples I’ve rooted for and friendships I’ve enjoyed watching develop and I’m one happy reader.
I really love the New Hope bunch more and more with each new book/series. I love how everyone is connected and how strong the personal relationships are between them. And, you know me, I love getting new tidbits about characters I love, so it’s great to see everyone back together again in this new series. Since Lexi is known for her wicked cliffhangers, I have to mention you won’t find one here! Huzzah! There is, however, a wicked teaser for the next book and I really, really can’t wait for Cade’s story in the second Love Unbound book. Hopefully it’ll be here sooner rather than later.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
