The future is bright for Reese Ellis. She has Mase Colt-Manning, the man of her dreams, and a family she didn’t know existed until her long-lost father arrived on her doorstep in Rosemary Beach. After growing up with a cruel mother and abusive stepfather, Reese is eager to get to know the caring and charming man who wants to be a part of her life. Everything is finally falling into place.
While Reese is visiting her new family in Chicago, Mase spends time with his “cousin,” Aida, who has worshipped him since childhood. Though they’re unrelated by blood, Mase and Aida have been raised to think of each other as family. But when Reese returns, she can tell something isn’t quite right with Aida, who clearly resents Reese and excels at manipulative little games. And though Mase is unsuspecting, Reese knows Aida doesn’t love him like a cousin should...
I’m going to be perfectly honest with you here, I had my concerns about this book going in. I liked Reese and Mase so well in When I’m Gone that I was really worried about how these outside forces would impact their relationship. I should’ve known to trust Abbi to give me the ending I wanted – and a little bit of angst along the way.
After leaving to spend some time with her father, Reese returns to Mase at the beginning of this book, only to find his “cousin” Aida at the ranch. This chick rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning. She was so transparent and manipulative, I wanted to smack Mase for not being able to see what was really going on. And, as much as I like Mase, I wanted to share some pretty strong words with him for not being totally honest about their not-exactly-related-by-blood status with Reese from the start. But seriously, he was just clueless… frustrating as that might have been.
I enjoyed seeing Reese gain confidence in this book. The girl had been through A LOT, starting at an early age, so I loved watching her grow more into herself as she got a new job and began to really find her place in the world. She deserved good things and she didn’t want them all to come at Mase’s hand, which I really respected. I even appreciated her friendship with Captain. (And I’m dying to learn more about him!)
When You’re Back was a quick read and a really good conclusion to Mase and Reese’s story. I also think it was a good addition to the Rosemary Beach series. I loved that, even though this book took place in Texas, we still had a chance to see some of the Rosemary Beach gang and get updates on their lives. I just really like these characters and can’t get enough of them. I’m already looking forward to the next book!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
