Playing naughty or nice...
Fiona Wilder knows all about falling in lust. Love? That's another story. Determined not to repeat past mistakes, the single mom and cupcake shop owner is focused on walking the straight and narrow. But trouble has a way of finding her. And this time it comes in the form of a smoking hot firefighter who knows all the delicious ways to ignite her bad-girl fuse.
Can lead to heartbreak...
Firefighter Mike Halsey learned long ago that playing with fire just gets you burned. He's put his demons behind him, and if there's one line he won't cross, it's getting involved with his best friend's ex. But when fate throws him in the path of the beautiful, strong, and off-limits Fiona, will he be able to fight their attraction? Or will he willingly go down in flames?
Or a sweet surprise!
If you’ve been following my blog the last couple months, you’ll surely know that I’ve fallen in love with Candis Terry’s Sweet, Texas series. Well, I recently binge-read the last three full-length books (and a novella!) in one weekend. I’m not even somewhat sorry about it.
I was so excited when I opened this book and learned it was time for Fiona’s story. I’ve liked her since she first appeared in the series. I respect the way she’s remained friends with her ex husband, Jackson. She’s a great mom to an absolutely beautiful little girl and she’s a good person. I love how she’s remained part of the Wilder clan, too. I’ve thought she absolutely deserved her very own happily ever after since reading Jackson’s in Sweet, Mistake. I’m glad Candis felt the same way. 😉
Firefighter Mike was a wonderful match for Fiona. Sure, it took them some time to get there because Jackson is his best friend and he’s unwilling to cross any lines. The bro code is important to him. As it should be. Mike was married before, too, but his relationship didn’t end as amicably as Fiona and Jackson’s. He’s not into serious relationships and he didn’t think he was worthy of Fiona. I definitely disagree. I loved watching them become friends and then build something real together.
Sweet Surprise is not a fast-paced romance. It doesn’t jump right into the sexy scenes. (Though it might’ve if Mike had his way about things.) Mike’s a good guy, but he is, after all, a guy. There’s an undeniable chemistry between them and since he’s not looking for anything long-term, the temptation to be friends with benefits is definitely there. Fiona’s focus is on NOT being Naughty Fiona and putting her daughter ahead of her desire. Because of this, there’s a slow burn and a natural progression to things between Fiona and Mike. Once the kissing starts, it’s swoony and sexy and everything I want in a contemporary romance book.
After three books featuring the love lives of the Wilder brothers, I was a little concerned it would be strange to switch things up and throw in two other characters. It wasn’t. Not even a little bit. Of course, I desperately wanted Jake’s book, but it was well worth delaying it for Fiona to find love. Especially because I fell a little in love with Mike over the course of this book as well. I loved his scenes with Fiona – and he absolutely melted my heart during his interactions with Izzy. It gave me all the warm fuzzy feels.
