The TBR Tag

Posted February 8, 2015 by Kim in Book Tags / 5 Comments

My friend Brandie tagged me to do this post and I’m excited to do it. It also led me to do a bit of cleaning up on Goodreads – something I’ve needed to do for a long time. Something I should probably do even more of soon.

1. How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

A better question might be “how don’t I keep track of my TBR pile.”

I started using Goodreads long, long ago as a place to mark all the books I was interested in. Ones that I might read at some point down the road. Though I’ve made some changes over time, it’s far more a cataloging system than it is a system to help me decide what to read next. In addition to my “to read” shelf, I’ve added “tbr soon”, “maybe one day” and “wishlist” shelves to the mix. My “want to read” is, currently, a mix of books I own and haven’t read and those I’m interested in reading. I’d like to get that switched over to being all books I own. And I will. One day. I think the wishlist and maybe one day are probably pretty self explanatory. I thought by making a “tbr soon” shelf, I would focus on those books I wanted so badly to read, but haven’t made time for. It hasn’t worked yet. I’m hopeful it will though.

To keep up with the review copies I get, the ones that have a timeline, I have a hand-written chart of their release dates. I used to put them on my blog calendar, but I’d blow them off that way. Now, they’re in a notebook on my dining room table/office space, where I can see them as I’m blogging and doing other things on my laptop. It’s helped me focus.

Oh, and let us not forget my failed attempt at a TBR Jar. Every now and then I’ll leave my choice up to fate (or the jar), but I don’t use it as frequently as I planned.

2. Is your TBR mostly print or eBook?

Mostly eBook, though there are a fair few titles on there that I own print copies of for one reason or another.

3. How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

I’m a fairly moody reader who has far too many books, so this can be a challenge. Sometimes I look at the list of release dates and grab one of the books that’s coming up, sometimes I pick a title I’m reading “for fun” and other times I dive right into whatever new release (or new ARC) I just received.

4. A book that’s been on your TBR list the longest?

The Cinderella Pact by Sarah Strohmeyer has been on my TBR since May 2010. I have every intention of reading this… one day.

5. A book you recently added to your TBR?

Beautiful Beloved by Christina Lauren is my most recent addition. I never intended to read this series because I didn’t love the first when I tried to read it a couple years ago, but after loving the first two books in their Wild Season series, I decided to give it another shot. And I’m glad I did!

6. A book on your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover.

I do judge books by their cover. I might not add a book solely for that reason, but I’ll admit I’ve grown interested in a fair few books because of their covers. A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray is one of those.

7. A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading.

I HOPE to read all the books on my TBR one day. But I also realize there just simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do it. I can’t pick just one though. If I have to pick one, I’ll go with The Diviners by Libba Bray. I’ve heard many great things, but it’s a huge book. I don’t know that I’ll ever sit down and read it.

8. An unpublished book on your TBR that you’re excited for.

Oh that’s a tough one. If I had to pick one from my wishlist, I’d say Confess by Colleen Hoover.

9. A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read but you.

It depends on whether we’re talking to my NA/Adult-reading friends or my YA friends. But it’s one of these two.

10. A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you.

Ok, maybe not EVERYONE, but a couple people whose opinions I really value. I’m getting there!

11. A book on your TBR that you’re dying to read.

I need to fit this book into my reading schedule. Soon.

12. How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Oh my god. I’m almost ashamed to admit this. Here’s the breakdown:

To Read: 624
TBR Soon: 10
Wishlist: 225
Maybe One Day: 371

I probably need to do some more cleaning.

Now, “tag, you’re it!” …
(Apologies if you’ve done it before! I can’t keep up with all the tags. Just hit me with a link in the comments.) 🙂

  1. LOVE! I like to clean off my Goodreads shelves a few times a year. Otherwise I get too overwhelmed with it. This post definitely helped me. I even read the book that has been on my list the longest last week! Yay for small accomplishments.

I’m such a moody reader that I can’t keep to a schedule or list at all. I totally understand that. I tried having a shelf on GR for books ‘on deck’ but my moods wouldn’t sync up to what was on my list most of the time. And I generally put off the longer books, too. For instance, all Kristen Ashley books on my list. Her books are usually super long, and even though people highly recommend them, I think about how many other books I can read in that amount of time. I think the same way when I start new series too. Oh, the time commitment!

I’m SO excited for Confess. Can’t wait!! I’m glad you gave the Beautiful Bastard series a try. I adored the first book. Now the second book in the series is the book that’s been on my TBR list the longest. 😉 Need to read it asap!

    Thanks for doing this!!

I’m a mood reader too. I failed with the TBR jar as well. Confess is my most anticipated book too and already preordered it. Just finished something real and gave it 4 stars. It’s a quick read. Diviners is on my tbr as well but the fact that it’s too big I’m hesitant to pick it up.

  3. I have my read, abandoned, tbr and wishlist shelves on Goodreads. The tbr is just for books I own and haven’t read yet while the ones I want are on wishlist. Then I have my genre shelves ie urban fantasy, dystopia, horror etc. So if I’m in the mood for horror, I just browse what I have on that shelf on the computer, then move them to currently reading. Then I go read it! I have a category for ebooks as well to keep them seperated. I find Goodreads useful to catalogue and select my next reads.

  4. Oh I loved reading this! I am SO excited for Confess! I really hope I get on the tour! I also want to read Something Real some time soon! I haven’t read Christina Lauren’s books yet, but they’re also on my massive TBR! SIGH. I love the idea of a TBR Jar. I pick books similarly to you- typically by release date, or just by mood!

I love that you tagged me! I already did this one though. <3
