Samantha Rousseau is used to getting her hands dirty. Working toward a master’s degree in wildlife biology while helping take care of her sick father, she has no time for celebrity gossip, designer clothes, or lazy vacations. So when a duchess from the small country of Lilaria invites her to dinner, Samantha assumes it’s to discuss a donation for the program. The truth will change the course of her life in ways she never dreamed.
Alex D’Lynsal is trying to keep his name clean. As crown prince of Lilaria, he’s had his share of scandalous headlines, but the latest pictures have sent him packing to America and forced him to swear off women—especially women in the public eye. That is, until he meets Samantha Rousseau. She’s stubborn, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Not to mention heiress to an estate in his country, which makes her everyone’s front-page news.
While Sam tries to navigate the new world of politics and wealth, she will also have to dodge her growing feelings for Alex. Giving in to them means more than just falling in love; it would mean accepting the weight of an entire country on her shoulders.
I have no idea why it took me so darn long to read Nichole Chase’s Suddenly series, but I’m thankful I finally saw the error of my ways. This book was pretty much what would happen if the movies The Prince & Me and Princess Diaries got together and made an incredibly awesome book baby. It was sweet, swoony and a lot sexier than I expected it to be.
I loved the characters in this book. Sam was a smart, driven woman. Alex was sexy, sweet and all-around delicious. Sam’s story might sound like a fairytale to some women, but it definitely wasn’t to her. She had her life plan figured out and she was just working towards it. She didn’t expect to find out she was royalty. Suddenly her future looks a lot different and she has some major decisions to make.
While the princess storyline was fun, it was the romance that made this book for me. It was so swoony and romantic. I enjoyed the pace at which things developed between Sam and Alex. I loved their banter and how playful they could be with each other. There was oodles of sexual tension and you just knew it was all going to break loose in a matter of time. When it did, it was steamy. A lot hotter than I would have expected with it’s sweet cover, to be perfectly honest. There was also a great focus on family and, if I’m honest, a few tear-jerker moments that definitely made me emotional.
I listened to this book in audiobook format and the time spent listening was definitely a highlight of my day. My miserable daily commute was far more enjoyable while listening to Caitlin Davies tell this story. Caitlin has narrated other audiobooks I’ve listened to in the past and I always enjoy the her performance. She gave a great voice to Sam and Alex and her entire performance made Suddenly Royal even that much more enjoyable.
In the time between when I finished this book and now that I’m writing my review, I devoured Recklessly Royal. I enjoyed it, too, but Sam and Alex will always hold a special place in my heart because they came first and I loved how romantic their story was. I’ve not yet gotten around to reading Reluctantly Royal, but it’s in the queue to be read soon. The Suddenly series is a great new adult series that’s not like any of the others I’ve read.
